NCIS: Los Angeles Episode Recap
Ambush
Airdate: November 17, 2009

A man is walking alone down the beach. He stops and listens for sounds and sees someone. He heads into an aquarium and tries to hide. He is caught from behind with a wire and choked to death.

Sam and Callen are walking around headquarters talking about positive reinforcement. Callen is more into negative reinforcement and doesn’t do personal contact like IMing, etc.. Sam is holding an operational book he put together. Callen teases him about it and asks if his mother helped him with it. He tells Sam Hetty will probably give him a star when she sees it. Mike Renko walks up and greets the duo. He has been out on an op for 2 months. Mike has been chasing a militia group called “ELE” (Enhancing Law Enforcement). He finally got an informant and hopes to get a link between ELE and some weapons that went missing at Pendleton. “Looks like you got your roommate back G. Love boat sails again,” Sam says. Mike tells him he’s staying with a friend. Sam and Callen tease Mike about only being in town 24 hours and staying with someone. They bring up his hygiene habits until Eric calls them from upstairs. Eric tells them Hetty wants to see them and whoever gets up there first receives a point. A race begins with Sam, Callen and Mike up the stairs to the Ops room, elbowing their way up. Callen wins as the 3 slow down when they enter the Ops room. They don’t see Hetty and ask where she is. “I’m every where Mr. Renko or have you been on assignment so long you’ve forgotten,” Hetty says via speakerphone. Eric tells them she’s in Washington.

Hetty gets off an elevator and she is chatting with them from her cell phone. She asks Eric to play the tape. They review the tape from the murder at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Callen pushes the mute button on the phone asks if anybody else thinks it’s weird. They all agree with him and he takes his finger off the mute button. Hetty tells him she heard him. Marine Lance Corporal Lance Mackaye was garroted at the aquarium. The entire incident was caught on a fish cam which broadcasts 24/7 on the internet. Sam wonders if Mackaye was a reservist, if the case shouldn’t be given to the local PD. Hetty tells them they’ll get the details from Renko and assigns the case to Callen. Renko tells the team that Mackaye was his informant. Over a 3 month period, 6 Dragon Antitank missiles disappeared somewhere between the manufacturer and Afghanistan. They narrowed it down to an armory at Pendleton. Their primary suspect is Scott Riley but he is clever and they haven’t been able to pin down how he got the weapons off the base. Mackaye was supposed to be eyes and ears only and worked in the armory with Riley. ELE was in the market for heavy weapons. They pulled phone records going back a decade. Private Riley has been in contact with Malcolm Tolrich, the Charismatic founder and his #1 John Bordinay. Last summer ELE chased 20 people into the desert and they all died of thirst and hunger. They were hoping to lock the ELE down before they did something really crazy, like arming themselves with missiles. “I think they just have,” Callen says.

In Washington, Vance greets Hetty. “Director Vance, door-to-door service, how out of character,” Hetty says. “Well people can change and I owe you one big time,” Vance replies. “You do, especially for forcing me to leave the children in charge,” says Hetty. She is in Washington for 8 hours to answer some questions regarding the security of Vance’s slush fund. “Why don’t they just throw me in a well and see if I float,” Hetty says. Vance tries to reassure Hetty it’s just answering a few questions. “This isn’t a witch hunt,” Vance says. “I seem to recall the same thing being said about my predecessor before she disappeared. Last I heard about Macy she was working out of a Quonset hut out of Djubti,” Hetty replies.

Kensi, Sam and Callen are coming from the aquarium. Kensi thinks someone was after him and the killer found him. They wonder why the killer was on the beach at the same time as Mackaye. Watching a man load up his equipment, Callen asks Sam, “Could you fit a dragon missile into a sail bag?” “With room to spare,” Sam replies. Kensi wonders what the odds are that Riley wind surfs.

Dom reviews the security footage from Pendleton with Sam and Callen. Riley leaves the base in his SUV with his surf equipment strapped to the top. The security guards check his vehicle from front to back but never look at the surf equipment. Riley goes to the beach, the ELE takes his sailbag, he takes theirs and repeats the process 6 times. “You hearing this Kensi,” Callen asks. Kensi is pulling surveillance on Riley. She’s got eyes on his vehicle but doesn’t see Riley. She heads over to his SUV and itests his sail bag. She is caught from behind by Riley with a wire to her throat. She breaks free and the two fight. He pulls a knife but she kicks it away. Kensi holds her own against Riley and he breaks free. Riley tackles him and he grabs for the knife but Renko steps on his hand, gun aimed and tells Riley it’s a bad idea. Renko was off checking Riley’s mailbox. “What no thanks for saving your ass?” Renko says. Kensi says her ass didn’t need saving. “Well, if anyone’s ass needs saving, it’s yours,” Renko adds taking a stand behind her while she cuffs Riley.

Kensi interrogates Riley. He tells her she was trying to steal his equipment and he didn’t know if she had a gun or a friend, turns out she had both. She asks him about his involvement with ELE. Watching from a monitor, Nate wonders if Kensi should be alone with Riley, he’s huge. “Riley’s bigger and stronger but, she’s meaner,” Renko replies. Renko says that they searched Riley’s apartment and found nothing. Dom and Eric searched bank accounts and also found nothing. “If this guy’s getting paid, he has some serious self-control,” Renko adds. Nate feels the game has changed if Riley was able to get 6 missiles off base and not get caught, then kill Mackaye with a fish net. Kensi comes out of interrogation. “He’s lying. He’s stonewalling, and he is messing with me,” she tells the men. “Sounds like you want a second date,” Renko teases her. “Nothing you will ever have to worry about,” Kensi responds. Kensi is certain Riley stole the missiles and killed Mackaye. Nate says Riley is part Tim McVay and part Uni-bomber, he will never betray his cause – he’s a follower, not a leader. They agree that Riley is afraid of something or someone.

Kensi drives up in an SUV to meet a military prisoner transport vehicle. In the backseat of her SUV is Renko and Riley. She stops, pulls a handcuffed Riley out of the backseat and walks him over to the MP’s. She watches Riley get shackled and when the MP moves, Callen is sitting across from Riley, posing as a prisoner. Renko tells Riley they’ll see him tomorrow, they’ll have more questions for him then. The MP turns out to be Sam. Callen glares at him and Sam gruffly asks, “What are you looking at?”

As the transport drives along, Callen tells Sam he has rights. He wants a shower, shave and clean clothes. Sam plays a hard ass and tells Callen he gave those rights away, he dishonored the uniform, he hopes it was worth it. Callen mocks Sam, then starts talking to Riley, but Riley wants to be left out of it. Eric and Nate listen in as Callen cracks a bad joke. “How many MP’s does it take to screw in a lightbulb? 50 – 1 to screw in the lightbulb and 49 to stand guard.” Callen asks if he wants another joke, and both men reply no. “Why don’t MP’s shower before they go to battle? Because their just going to wash up on shore anyways.” This last joke gets a smile out of Riley.

Hetty calls Eric to check in. Eric asks if she’s having a good time in Washington. Hetty says the last person who had a good time in Washington was General Guvall Early and he was attacking it at the time. “So the patients haven’t burned down the asylum yet?” she asks. Eric tells her that everything is going well and Callen is operational. She wants to know what he means. Eric tells her that they had a breakthrough in the militia case. Her tone of voice changes and she wants to know what kind of breakthrough.

Dom and Nate are going over some information while Nate checks out Riley’s laptop. Eric walks in and turns on the speaker phone. Hetty’s voice comes through telling them how displeased she is with the turn of events. As she’s telling them what she wants them to do, they get an operator recording. Hetty is furious and calls back. Eric tells him to not answer but Nate does anyway. Nate tells her they ran a full risk assessment and got the sign-off from Director Vance. They didn’t run it by her because she was in a Senate hearing. She tells him they have no idea what they are up against. The risk assessment is useless, the dangers are unquantifiable, Callen could be killed or worse. She tells them to shut it down as she’s called back into the Senate hearing. Nate tells her it’s too late and she hangs up. Dom pulled up 247 locations that Riley had googled on his computer. All the locations are federal buildings, immigration processing centers. He realizes that those locations may be potential targets.

In the transport, Callen continues to antagonize Sam. Callen tells him he’s proud of his country, it’s just the government that sucks. Riley listens and watches the exchange. A small truck pulls up beeping it’s horn, alongside the transport. The transport gets cut off and has to stop. Gunshots are fired, then the back of the truck opens. Sam fires his weapon, taking out the gunmen as he opens the back doors. Another man pops up and shoots Sam. He jumps on-board and Callen asks what took him so long. The man unlocks Callen and as he jumps out of the truck, Sam sits up and shoots him in the back. Callen grabs a weapon and shoots Sam three times. Riley watches everything going on and begs Callen to unlock him and take him along. Riley tells Callen he has friends who will provide them food, shelter and nobody will ever find them. The 2 men jump into the second truck and take off. An SUV pulls up behind the transport and Kensi jumps out. She bangs on the truck and tells the men the party is over. All the men get up and the two Sam ‘shot’ hop into the transport and take off. Sam goes with Kensi and Renko in the SUV. They have a GPS locater on the truck that Callen is in.

Callen and Riley pull up to a location in the woods. Callen says they’d better not be going camping. As Riley begins to exit the vehicle, a shot is fired, taking out the mirror on the driver’s door. Riley yells for the man, Jay, to hold his fire. He asks Callen for his gun because the man they are going to see doesn’t take kindly to strangers with guns. Callen isn’t thrilled but gives up his weapon. As Riley walks away, Callen says “You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m being shot at by a Jonas brother. I think I’m about to meet the rest of the family.” Nate watches the scene as it’s going down from a hidden camera in the truck. Riley tells Jay to not shoot at him again, but to take him to Malcolm. Jay isn’t thrilled because Malcolm doesn’t like strangers, but both men get in the truck. Callen wants to know if there are bathrooms but Riley tells him to go in the woods. Callen is angry because he saved Riley’s life and now he’s going camping, with no toilet or t.v.’s. “At least where I come from we know how to have fun,” Callen says. “At least where I come from we know how to shut our mouths,” Jay replies. Callen responds with, “At least I don’t have an Appalachian go-tee.” Jay says, “At least I can grow one.” Riley gets back in the truck after opening the gate, so Callen starts up the truck and heads down the road.

Eric tells Nate he needs to hear something. Ten years ago, Hetty worked with a man, Sullivan, who was killed trying to infiltrate a militia group. Nate feels it explains Hetty’s reaction. Eric tells him there’s more. Hetty recruited Sullivan to NCIS and also wrote the recommendation to get Sullivan the job. Nate reads “composed, confident and suited to the rigors of undercover work.” They realize she’s concerned about Callen.

Hetty seeks out and finds Vance. “Why on god’s green earth did you not tell me Leon?” she asks Vance. She tells him the militia are crazy, paranoid and dangerous. Vance says that Callen isn’t Sullivan and they deal with terrorists, cartels and gangs everything, there’s no reason to think this will be any different. He asks for Hetty to be escorted out. He tells Hetty, he promises, he’ll take care of it. “Some promises you can’t keep Leon,” Hetty says then walks out.

Sam, Kensi and Renko pull up to the same gate Callen drove through. Outside the SUV Kensi opens the gate, checks the tire marks and tells them there’s been a lot of traffic through the gate. She picks something up off the ground as Sam and Renko exit the vehicle and head to the back. She runs up as they are grabbing their gear and says she found Callen’s earwig. Sam realizes Callen knew he’d be searched.

AmbushCallen pulls up to the camp, where there are over 50 heavily armed men standing around. Sam, Renko and Kensi, wearing Kevlar’s and armed, hide up in the woods, watching. Renko identifies one of the missiles, then sees Malcolm and his right hand man, John, walk up to Callen’s truck. After Callen is searched, Malcolm wants to know who his friend is. Riley explains how they got sprung from the transport and that all the men are dead. Renko spots the other 5 missiles in the cabin. Malcolm is angry that Riley has exposed them by getting caught, killing a marine, escaping and bringing a stranger to the camp. Riley feels it was the best way. Meanwhile, Kensi calls Dom and demands immediate back-up. Renko hopes that Callen will get out of there the first chance he gets. The three watch as Malcolm nods his head, giving John an order to kill Riley. As John turns the weapon on Callen, Sam fires and takes him out. The men scramble for cover as Callen tries to get out of harm’s way. Sam tells the other 2 to not fire unless they have to. Callen grabs Jay as a hostage and moves around the side of the building. He is watched by 5 heavily armed men. Malcolm tells them to not shoot.

Callen tries to negotiate with Malcolm. Callen just wants the keys to the truck, to get in and drive away. Malcolm wants to know who is in the woods but Callen claims he doesn’t know. A man tries to come up behind Callen but Callen fires off a round at him. Malcolm offers Jay as a sacrifice because he’ll die for his cause but, Jay would rather not die. Meanwhile, via the hidden camera, Nate, Dom and Eric are watching the scene unfold. They are calling for back-up and Vance. Callen continues to talk to Malcolm as Sam pulls up, lights flashing. He tells them he is with the ATF, the camp is surrounded. Sam says he’s not armed, he’s there to negotiate a settlement. Malcolm asks about Callen and Sam says Callen is an agent also. Sam says they have 30 minutes to negotiate a deal before the agents come in. Malcolm holsters his weapon, then tells Sam to bring in his agent and they’ll talk. Sam brings Callen back out. He takes the gun from Sam and hands it over to Malcolm. Malcolm tells them the ATF won’t come in if there are hostages involved. Malcolm calls Jay over then hits him in the face with the butt of the weapon. Callen tells him there was no need for it and leans down to tend to Jay. Malcolm hits Callen in the back of the head, rendering him unconscious.

AmbushSam and Callen, whose head is bleeding, are tied up inside the cabin. Callen comes to and asks how long he was out. Sam says, “A few minutes. I’ve been kicking you the whole time.” Callen wonders why they are still alive. Sam says they will be until Malcolm figures out there’s no ATF coming to the rescue. Callen wants Sam to explain what he was doing. Sam says he saved Callen, that’s what he was doing. Callen considers he’s lying by a stove with a concussion, he’d much rather be outside with his gun and a hostage.

Vance pulls Hetty out of the Senate hearings. She wants to know how bad it is. He informs her that the militia have both Callen and Sam hostage. He tells her they are doing all the can, but there’s nothing more she can do. He’ll keep her updated as they get word.

Renko and Kensi are watching the camp. She tells him backup is 20 minutes out. He tells her it’ll be over in 10 minutes, the militia is already packing up the missiles. She wonders if they can buy them some time. He points out Callen in his scope and wonders if she knows Morse Code.

AmbushCallen points out that the group has moved the last missile out of the cabin. Sam notices the flashing red light on Callen’s forehead and realizes it’s morse code. Callen wants to know if it’s flickering because he feels it flickering. Callen says he’s got it and Sam asks what. “That bobby pin. I started wearing it in the 90’s and haven’t used it since,” Callen replies while picking the lock on his handcuffs. Sam tells him it’s the most well displayed of standard operating procedure he’s even seen Callen use. Sam reads the Morse Code and tells Callen, “Kensi says the helicopters are 20 minutes out.” This begins a debate between the 2 of them over whether it was Kensi or Renko who sent the Morse Code. Sam says he can send code back, he paid attention. “I thought you said I was well prepared?” Callen asks. “Yeah well it must have been Stockholm syndrome,” Sam replies. Sam sends the word “Masciline” back to Kensi.

Nate, Dom and Eric are sitting around the laptop, watching the video feed. They are trying to figure out what Masciline means. Hetty calls in and Eric asks her to not yell at them. She just wants an update. They tell her they are trying to figure out Sam’s Morse Code. Once Hetty hears the word, she tells them it’s not a what it’s a who, Masciline was a magician. He tricked the Nazi’s into believing that a handful of men were an entire division. She tells them they should play to the Militia’s fears that they are being surrounded by the ATF.

Kensi and Renko separate and move around the woods. Eric jams the radio frequencies of the militia group, hoping that as they tune into their frequency by ‘accident’ they’ll think that they are surrounded by a whole division.

Hetty approaches the Secretary of Defense. He asks what he can do for her. She tells him she needs a favor, a small one.

The Militia groups overhears what they think is an entire division, being given the order to engage. Eric gives Kensi the OK and she and Renko begin firing off rounds in the air. Kensi and Renko move around, firing their weapons. The Militia group fires back. One man runs into the cabin and Sam takes him out, then grabs his weapon. As Sam and Callen try to figure how they can get out, Jay comes in and aims his gun at them. Callen asks if they are going to go through this again. Jay says at least he’s not a liar. “At least I’m not running around with a bunch of want-to-be Rambo’s. You out to be with your friends playing Guitar Hero or down at the beach picking up chicks. Not hanging out with a bunch of The Hills Have Eyes psychos.” Sam tells Jay there comes a time he has to chose which side he is on.

AmbushOutside, the Militia continues to fire into the woods. Jay comes running out from the side of the cabin and yells for Malcolm. He tells him there are 20 agents coming up the access road. Malcolm asks if he’s sure and didn’t imagine it. Jay swears he’s telling the truth, they need to get out of there. Several Stealth bombers fly overhead, making the group nervous. Malcolm makes a run for it, gets into a truck and takes off, leaving the group behind. The rest of the militia make a run for it. Sam and Callen come out of the cabin and head down the hill on foot, in pursuit of Malcolm. They end up coming out on the road ahead of Malcolm. When Malcolm sees them, he accelerates so Sam and Callen fire at the truck. The truck flips over and crashes.

As the day gets darker, the backup and other agents round up the Militia. Callen goes over to Jay and talks to him. He spoke with the Agent in charge and the U.S. Attorney and they will let him go home, for now. Jay cries and says call my mom. Callen pulls out his phone and dials the number for him. “At least I know how to dial a cell phone,” Callen says. Jay, with tears in his eyes, smiles. “At least I’m not going to jail,” Jay replies. “At least I didn’t accidentally join a militia,” Callen says. “At least I finally woke up and saved your behind,” Jay replies. “Yeah at least your on my side,” Callen says. He puts the phone on Jay’s shoulder. When Jay’s mom answers, he talks to his mother.

Vance and Hetty are chatting. Hetty is upset that Vance played her. He knew by pulling her out of the meeting and telling her Callen was in danger, she’d do what she needed to save his life. She complains about blowing her funding on an air show. They shake hands and Vance tells her that Sullivan would have made a good agent. “Like Callen,” she says. She admits she’d never lost an agent before Sullivan. “But you saved 2 today. You should feel good,” Vance says. Hetty walks away and smirks.

Sam and Callen are back in the office. They exchange barbs on Sam’s rescue mission. Callen wants to know if Sam is going to put it in his manual with color coded tabs. “Yeah, tab marked dumb ass idea,” Sam says. “Nice job, Special Agent Hanna,” Callen says. “Ah you said it. Feel good?” Sam asks. “Nah, cheapens the work,” Callen replies as he lies on the sofa.
